Christmas Organising
Now is the perfect time to get organised and make sure you write and mail your Christmas cards this year. Getting your Christmas cards out on time, only takes a little bit of forward planning, so what are you waiting for.
Tips To Get You Organised
Here are some of our key tips on making sure your Christmas cards get mailed this year.
- Type up your Christmas card list and keep it in a safe place so that you can refer to it (to add or delete names) year after year. I also put an asterisk next to any overseas addresses, as a reminder to post their card early.
- I find the easiest way to manage my Christmas Card list is in Excel. That way I can mail merge and print off addresses directly onto labels. You can also print directly onto the envelope, which saves you not only time but also the cost of the label.
- Create your own “return to sender labels” using labels purchased from Office Works. I have used http://www.coastallabels.com.au before and they were very quick and well priced. Also check out: https://www.thatsmine.com.au
- Set a date and plan to write your Christmas cards in the last week of November, because otherwise Christmas day will be here before you know it and that pile of blank Christmas cards will still be sitting on your desk.
- Christmas cards with ‘card only’ marked on the envelope can be posted at a reduced rate during November and December.
- Overseas mail at Christmas time takes longer to arrive. Plan ahead and arrange to send cards or presents in early to mid November, to avoid disappointments (and the very long queues at the post office).
- For great savings, buy Christmas cards, wrapping paper, ribbons and decorations at post-Christmas sales – you would be amazed how much you can save.
Until next time, happy organising.

Christmas Organising
As professional organisers we like to be organised and start planning things well in advance, especially when it comes to Christmas. Suppliers book out quickly, so it is important to start thinking about the services you might need over the Christmas and holiday period. Home security becomes even more important at Christmas and holiday time, so now is the time to start thinking about this. Here are some tips for holiday home safety this Christmas.
Christmas Home Security Tips
- This may sound a little strange, however don’t display your Christmas tree and gifts right in the front window. Whilst it looks great with the Christmas lights flashing, it’s also an invitation for burglars to check out your Christmas shopping! If you must place your tree in front of the window, make sure you display them in a way that they are not too obvious.
- This is an oldie but a goodie – Don’t hide your door key under a mat. The first place a burglar will look for a house key is under a mat. And the second place that they will look is under a rock, flower pot or door ledge, so think again when you are hiding your key.
- Speak with a trusted friend or neighbour and leave a spare key with them, if you need to. Alternatively, you could use The Lifestylers Group, key holding service.
- I’m sure your Christmas lights look amazing, however be mindful of your security if you run a cord from inside the house, out to the lights. Even if it’s ajar, this provides easy access for would-be criminals. I always say that opportunity creates a thief.
- Don’t leave information on you answering machine that indicates you’re on holidays.
- If you are away for a while, be careful that your answer machine doesn’t fill up with messages – as it’s another clue that you’re not home.
- Arrange to forward your home phone number to your mobile, a neighbour or to The Lifestylers Group for the duration of your holiday.
- Keep your drapes or blinds closed at night. If you’re not there, then get someone to pop in each night to close the blinds and open them in the morning.
- Buy an inexpensive, 24 hour timer for your lamps. This turns them on and off, giving the illusion that you are home.
- Don’t leave your rubbish bins out on the street.
- A good friend of mine once left their rubbish bin out for two nights and on the third day, they got broken into.
- Don’t let newspapers pile up on your front door step. Get Australia Post to hold your mail. It only costs a small amount. If you have run out of time, then get The Lifestylers Group to do it for you.
One of the girls at work always says “Opportunity creates a thief”. What opportunities are you providing for a would-be thief?

Storing Magazines
I love my monthly subscription to Gourmet Traveller, but after a couple of years I’ve started to collect quite the pile of magazines. I often (and when I say often, I mean every couple of weeks) refer back to them as I love cooking and searching for new inspirations so I don’t necessarily want to throw them out, but I need to organise and store them differently.
Declutter your Magazines
Firstly, you need to do a cull. As professional organisers, our job is to go into clients homes and help organise their rooms. I am forever telling clients that there is only so much professional organising we can do. To get the most impact you often need to reduce down the amount of “stuff” that you have first, in order to get the most out of the organising sessions and the space.
Organise your Magazines
My first tip is to turn your magazines into a feature of your living room. Sort your mags into date order and group accordingly to the different publications. Then, lay them flat and put the biggest ones on the bottom of the pile and smaller ones on top. During this process you may decide to cull ones that you know you won’t refer to again.
Or alternatively, you may cut out recipes/articles that you think you will use, place them in a labelled folder and throw the rest out. Remember to recycle them too.
Place your pile of mags (about 40cm high) on the floor, perhaps next to your sofa or wall and then place a picture frame or little ornament on them. Your once pile of messy mags now takes on a whole new designer look.
For the serious magazine hoarder, this may not work, so you may need to look for different storage options.
You can also use cardboard magazine holders. You can get a great range of colours from places like kikki-k and Officeworks. Group your magazines by title and then order by month. Don’t forget to label the magazine holders accordingly.
Every 6 – 12 months you will need to do a cull. Some people like the method whereby when you purchase a new mag, you have to throw one out. It really comes down to how often you will refer back to them, how much space you have and how many magazines you have collected.
Happy magazine organising.

Are You Organized for Christmas?
If you are anything like me, you will set up your Christmas tree on the 1st of December. Although I must say that I am having a bit of a dilemma this year. We move house on the 18th of December! Hmmm do I put the tree up on the 1st or the 18th of December? I think I might have to go for a mini tree this year, and perhaps upgrade to the full size Christmas tree on the 18th. Perhaps I can get the removalist to deliver our goods in the morning and have a tree delivered in the afternoon. I love the spirit behind Christmas and just could not go without having a tree. I also love the anticipation of getting ready for Christmas and with some forward planning, it does not have to be too stressful.
Christmas Organizing Tips
Everyone loves a beautifully decorated tree. My tip is to think about the colour schedule for your Christmas tree and decorations in advance. Good decorations always sell out first so a bit of forward planning will ensure your tree looks great and is colour coordinated.
Christmas Entertaining
Finalise any guest lists for Christmas lunch or other functions that you might be hosting. Then you can check and see if you are missing any crockery, cutlery and purchase it early. You know when you only have a setting for 8, but you have got 10 guests for lunch and at the last minute you are scrounging around to find an extra two table settings that look vaguely similar to the other eight ones. Yes, you know what I mean.
Christmas Pet and House Minding
If you have not already done so, book your pet minding services. Good suppliers book out early so this is really important.
If you are going away you may also need to start thinking about who can look after your house, water the plants and collect the mail, whilst you are gone. If you cannot get a friend or family member to assist, perhaps you could use the servicing of a company that will check up on your house, water the plants and collect the mail whilst you are on holidays. The Lifestylers Group do exactly that
Spare Christmas Presents
Stock up on a few spare presents. It might also be a good idea to pick up a few practical and versatile ones, “just in case” you need them.
Christmas Cards
We love receiving them, but somehow never get around to writing them.
Do you find that yet another Christmas has past and you didn’t get around to sending out your Christmas cards? Well this year, you can change that. Set yourself a goal. Perhaps your goal could be to write 2 cards a night, whilst you are sitting in front of the TV. Now when you put it like that, how could you not be organised this Christmas?
Happy Christmas Organising.

Get Organised For Christmas
As a professional organiser, I love nothing more than planning for my Christmas. I started my Christmas shopping several months ago. I am always thinking about gifts that I can buy family and friends and great recipes that I can try. Now, I understand that not all people are that way inclined, so I have listed below some tips to help you start planning for the big day.
With only nine weeks to go before the big day, it’s time to start getting organised for Christmas. You can avoid the traffic mayhem, the parking challenges, the frustration of finding out that the perfect gift you wanted to buy is sold out by a little forward planning.
Christmas Organising
So with only 9 weeks to go until Christmas, the first thing I wanted to focus on is getting the house in order for all those extra guests or parties that you will be having.
First, review what maintenance needs to be done around the house like painting, repairs, pictures to be hung and those small annoying little maintenance issues etc. As it gets closer to Christmas it gets harder to get a good handyman or builder as they are all booked out, so book your handyman now.
Christmas Spring Cleaning
Secondly, if you have not finished your spring cleaning, now is the perfect time to finish it off. Now is the time to:
- Wash the windows inside and outside
- Get the carpet, blinds, sofa’s and upholstery cleaned
- Tidy up the garden
Decluttering The Spare Room
Thirdly, now is the perfect time to get the spare room organised. You can purchase some really nifty storage solutions that will look great in the spare room, whilst providing the perfect storage solution to contain all the clutter.
Image: from http://www.plush.com.au
Whether it is a computer cupboard that contains all the papers and mess, a storage bench, a fold-up bed that comes out from the wall or an ottoman that doubles as a pull out bed, you can find some versatile storage solutions.

Perhaps you might need to purchase new linen, doona covers, pillows or matching towels. Plan to purchase these items soon, rather than the week before Christmas, when stock levels are low.
Now, look at what items are cluttering up the room. Think about the things and decide what should be thrown out, what can be donated to charity and what can be sold on eBay. If you plan your declutter well, find out when your next hard rubbish waste collection is and get rid of any unwanted furniture and avoid having to pay for rubbish removal or skip fees.
With a bit of forward planning and professional organising you can avoid many of those last minute stresses like trying to get your home ready for Christmas.
Happy Christmas Planning!

Is Your Wardobe Out of Control – Perhaps It’s Time to Declutter?
As I sit here watching the Spring Carnival Races on TV (I love my racing) there is one thing that comes to mind, my wardrobe for Spring Racing. Now, it’s a pretty important issue for every girl, don’t you think.
Time to declutter and organise your wardrobe?
Having decluttered the odd wardbrobe (or a hundred or so) for clients, I think I have got some good tips to offer. Not only can it act as a spring clean, but it can help you get ready for the spring racing season or the next season ahead of us.
I think wardrobe decluttering is something that should be done at least once a year. Did you know that on average, we wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time? It’s amazing when I start asking clients – when was the last time your wore that outfit. The answer is always the same. So now is the time to start decluttering your wardrobe.
Here are some tips on how to declutter and organise your wardrobe:
Assign Some Time To Declutter
This kind of declutter job always takes longer than you think. You’re probably going to need at least half a day to organize your wardrobe.
Start Small
Don’t pull everything out of your wardrobe. You will be in a bigger mess than before you started and if you get called away by the kids or a phone call then you will have to deal with the big mess when you come back.
One Person’s Trash is Another’s Treasure
I love this one. Anything that is good and you know would make a friend happy, then wash, iron and give it to your friend. (Just remember to do this within 2 weeks of your declutter session, otherwise you will find it will never leave your house!).
Make Some Money Fom Your Decluttering
For items that are designer or vintage, you can sell them on eBay.
Donate Them
For general items, they can be donated to your local charity store.
Repair Items
For items that need to be altered, drop it off for repair (and ideally within 2 weeks) otherwise you will forget and it will become clutter again and make its way back into your wardrobe!
Haven’t Worn it The Last Year?
The say bye, bye…if you haven’t had it out in the last 12 months then throw it in the “ditch it” pile. Certain classic items (i.e. LBD,) are exempt.
Keep, Throw Out or Maybe?
Be as ruthless as you can. These are the rules:
- Anything that’s ripped, stained or worn needs must be thrown out.
- Things that don’t fit must be thrown out or put in the “maybe” pile. The same applies to anything that’s less than flattering.
Maybe? Maybe Not?
If you are indecisive you might have a huge maybe pile. Give all the items in this pile a second look using these rules:
- If it doesn’t fit right now, is it likely to fit anytime soon?
- If it needs cleaning or repairs, is it worth the cost? Then ask yourself, if you do get the repairs done will you wear it within the next 2 months? If not then perhaps it needs to go out.
- If you’re emotionally attached to the item and absolutely can’t bear to part with it, put it on the keep pile. This ‘get out of jail free’ card is valid for a couple of items only, so be selective.
Organize Your Wardrobe
Now once you have gone through your wardrobe, now it’s time to put everything pack and organise it neatly. But first, give your wardrobe a quick wipe out remove and put away everything that doesn’t belong.
Organize your wardrobe with the clothing grouped by type or colour using good hangers and shoe trees and folding all non-hanging garments neatly. Leave a space between everything if you can as it helps with the tidy, ‘minimalist’ look.
Wardrobe Storage Product
You can buy some great storage product to help you keep your wardrobe organised. Ikea have some great fabric dividers that you can store all your underwear and socks in. There are also some good coat hangers that you can use to create more room in your wardrobe. Felt covered hangers are perfect for silk tops and items that are inclined to slip off standard coat hangers.
If you need some help organizing your wardrobe, then contact us at The Lifestylers Group, as we love organizing wardrobes.
Until next time, happy organising.
